Since when do we cancel sports?

Now that all Major Conferences have cancelled their Basketball Tournaments, when was the last time America stopped playing?

In American Sports there have been Work stoppages, labor disputes, hold outs, games cancelled and postponed for weather, riots, all sorts of reasons to stop or move an event to a better time and/or place. However sports in America have never been cancelled on such a wide scale. Now we have the Corona Virus or COVID-19 coming after our beloved March Madness among other things.

Sports are more than just a hobby or something your 45 year old fat gym teacher makes you do right after lunch. (except the cool kids, they didn’t want to stink before 7th period math). Sports matter to people, not just fans, or athletic departments, or big time television companies who make crazy money. These young student athletes have worked their entire lives for these moments, March Madness is the culmination of years and years of work for most of these kids. For a lot of them, this is their last chance to make an impression on an NBA scout, or put down tape for the Euro leagues, or even the last chance to leave a legacy at their small school in Vermont. This is an opportunity they may never get back. Lets just hope the NCAA tournament is delayed and not cancelled like these Conference Championships. What other events have caused something like this?

During World War I, not only were all able bodied men from 18 – 20 years of age were slated to be drafted in early 1919( by the military, not the NFL, NBA or MLB.) But, fear of the Spanish Flu had eviscerated most of the 1918 college football season. Instead of cancelling football, The Army Athletic Program decided to allow young men to enlist in the Student Army Training Corps instead of being drafted so they could physically train for the possibility of war. We were heading into a major military offensive, and the Spanish Flu had cancelled college football, and the government says ” Ya know what? People love sports, lets give them sports.” So they funded basically the whole season and convinced other colleges that the men at their universities must play football in order to prepare them as soldiers for service in the military. The 1918 college football season would go on.

World War II? Attacks on American soil. still played sports- Fun Fact: The Rose Bowl was played in Durham, N.C.

Korean War? still played sports

Vietnam War? still played sports

Avian Flu? still played sports

H1N1 (swine flu)? still played sports, you get the picture.

The largest delay I can think of other than a labor dispute, was back in 2001. In the U.S. of A, even 9/11, the largest attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor only postponed Major League Baseball’s playoffs for 1 week. I mean we were under actual attack, thousands of people had died, countless affected by that day and what would turn out to be our nations longest war, still on going to this day. (Another topic for another time.)

When President George W. Bush stood on the mound at Yankee Stadium to throw out the first pitch of ALCS game 2, America stood with him, and sports were the uniting factor for a president and a people. All of whom for 3 hours that night could live in the moment, and not in fear of the realization that we stood on the brink of war.

So, what is different this time?

Perhaps its internet coverage? Maybe people are soft and scared to get germs in an age filled with bubble wrap and hand sanitizer? Maybe the liberal media is trying to scare you and tank the market so they can get the President beat in the election!!! (joking)

Maybe, just maybe we put our stupid monkey brains away for a second and realize that sometimes life is bigger than sports, bigger than our team pride, bigger than our latest money-line parlay, or even bigger than the huge, I mean HUGE TV deals these broadcast companies have. We are talking about the lives of humans, people will die, maybe even people you know. I love sports, I love everything about them, but this time I know the fans and athletes should probably wear this L and do what we can to help. Even if it just means not going to a game or event and try to stop the spread of a deadly disease.

Normally when we think of Flu outbreaks, we think of people dying sure, the elderly who may have compromised immune systems, the young and defenseless, or maybe just regular old sick people. What I didn’t mention in the paragraphs above was the Spanish Flu is estimated to have infected 500 million about 30% and to have killed 3-5% of the world’s population in 1918. It was attacking young, healthy people just 100 years ago, and the only reason people didn’t freak out was government interference. Wartime censors were effectively blocking reporting of the Flu in countries fighting on our side. They were allowed however to talk about how it was ravaging Europe, especially Spain, hence the name “Spanish Flu.”

The internet may have actually done us a solid, Twitter might have actually help us be the right amount of scared this time. So ya know what, cancel the games, if I know my generation, we have plenty to do anyway. I see months long Netflix binges, Video game streams lasting days, maybe even a book reading in my future. Not for nothing Florida State is now the ACC Regular Season Champions, and outright ACC Champions with the cancellation of their tournament. ALso with an Appearance at #4 of the Associated Press Top 25 this week, I say we give them a Final Four Banner as well. Go Noles.

Athlete Death Threats

Serious Issue or Device to Gain Sympathy?

Let me start off by saying that Death Threats are bad… Duh

However, I recently got into a Twitter altercation with an Astros fan who insists that these Cheaters lives are in danger because Josh Reddick says he has received death threats. Some will say Josh had nothing to do with the cheating scandal, Even if he wasn’t a trash can banger, he at least knew what was happening. Silence is compliance my friend.

Is his life really in danger? Let’s take a look.

I am of the belief that sports fans are radicals, deeply invested lunatics that live and die with the rise and fall of their beloved sportsballplayerguy/ team. I know because I am one.

I also believe Twitter is a lawless place where idiots run rampant, saying whatever they want with little/no recourse.

So naturally when you combine the two, you get a wild combination of vitriol and a place that lets you voice it to the world. Did your hated rival make a game winning 3 pointer to sink your hopes of making the NCAA tournament? You should definitely tell them how much you hate them. Favorite player throw a touchdown to hit the over on the football game you bet your last $100 on? Send them all the love and praise, they might even retweet you.

So, what about when these eggs on twitter send death threats to players? Whether through a private DM or a tweet, what do we think? Obviously it’s never right to threaten someone’s life over a game, but are they real threats? Is some Grey Avatar, no picture user named YankeesFan543258745 going to show up to your house and punch you in the face? Probably not.

I contest that after these controversial events unfold in the sports world such as the Astros Cheating Scandal and the keyboards are on fire with rage calling for revenge, these players are tired of being the bad guy almost instantly. They know what they did was wrong, they gave an “apology” and now they think it should just go away. Fans are ripping into them, MLB “punished” the team, Other baseball players are not exactly happy with the Astros or the MLB. Next the media is asking what else can be done and constantly picking the scab of every player in front of a microphone.

So what do they do? Players come out and say, “Yea well, I received death threats… you should feel bad for me too.” Did they? Have we seen any record of this? Did anyone in the clubhouse pull up their phones and show anyone? Let’s say Josh Reddick did get death threats, that sucks man, I’m sorry that you have to put up with it and feel uncomfortable with your family, I get it. But are these actually a REAL Threat? When has a player ever been viciously attacked by a fan?

Ahh yes, the deadly hot dog. In 2011, Tiger woods was attempting a putt when a hot dog hit the green he was putting on. Photo- TMZ

I would hate for an outfielder to catch a mustard covered wiener to the face in the 7th inning. Actually that would be awesome.

Who can forget the time that Roger Federer was maliciously attacked by a drunk guy who tried to put a HAT on his head?!?!

Unless what Josh Reddick is really worried about is the ever rabid, drunk baseball fan, which we all are aware have been known to cause disaster on the field.

Fans are crazy, and say shit they regret sometimes. Who knows? maybe they don’t regret threatening someone who they thought robbed their team of a fair outcome. But if these threats were credible, why would you be going to the MLB or media to say you need protection? If your life was in danger, or physical health in jeopardy, you would ask Twitter to find out who this person was then involve the Police or even the FBI. This is the United States, we have law enforcement and great security at every sports event. If you are actually threatened, then pursue legal action.

This is simply a move by a group of dudes who are under fire and having to defend their actions or dodge questions they simply don’t want to answer.  People like Josh Reddick want you to feel bad for them because it’s not their fault they cheated and didn’t have any negative consequences as a result. He was trying to get sympathy from the media and turn the conversation in a different direction.

Verdict

I wholeheartedly do not believe any Houston Astros players’ life is in any sort of danger, I think that Josh Reddick said is trying to shift the story and this is a practice commonly used by people to garner sympathy.

Real death threats exist in certain circumstances, No one should ever mention someones loved ones, Wives, Kids, or otherwise. In this case, however, things are getting blown out of proportion.

Unless Josh Reddick moves to Argentina and becomes a soccer player, he will be just fine.

P.J. Walker vs Jacoby Brissett

The Colts Quarterback Battle that never was…

In July 2019 I attended Colts Training Camp in Carmel, Indiana which was beautiful by the way. What I was hoping to see was Andrew Luck get ready to lead my beloved Indianapolis Colts to a playoff appearance and put up MVP numbers. What i got to wacth instead was Jacoby Brissett leading the first team while a mix of Chad Kelly and Phillip “P.J.” Walker battle over reps with the second and third teams. I thought to myself, great we have a guy who’s primary photo on Google is a mugshot and a 5’11” qb from Temple competing for the third roster spot. Of course at this time i did not know that Andrew Luck had a surprise in store for all of us fans in just a few weeks.

When Andrew Luck did retire I was crushed, at first i actually thought it was a prank from my friends because i was borderline blackout drunk. My phone was blowing up with texts from my friends and i received several calls, i thought it was a coordinated effort. With no ESPN message to verify, I turned on the pre-season game and what do I see? Adam Schefter crushing my dreams for the 2019-2020 NFL season as well as my hopes for the Colts to complete at the top of the AFC for the next 8-10 years with Luck. Dreams dashed, i had some idea that Jacoby Brissett would be named the starter and we would be OK. Hell he was thrown into the fire all of 2017 with no real warning and did pretty well after another Andrew Luck injury. At least this season he has owned the whole pre-season and had time to get ready, right?

Now the roster is set, the Colts opt to bring in Brian Hoyer as an experienced back up and Chad Kelly to hold down the 3rd roster spot. The nephew of Jim Kelly has talent, but has been in and out of trouble since his Ole Miss days. PJ Walker was seemingly an after thought. He had been signed and cut by the colts several time since being signed as an UDFA in 2017. I can’t help but think he was overlooked, not a height joke. (I’m only 5’9″ on a good day) He never had a real chance to crack the roster.

Flash forward to NFL Week 7, the Colts are 5-2 and Jacoby is performing nicely and all the talking head are over reacting. “Jacoby Brissett is playing like an MVP!” Only to be followed by going 2-7 to finish the season with Brissett posting average numbers at best. His final numbers being – 61% completions/2942 YDS/18 TDs/6 INTs, not exaclty lighting the world on fire. The future of the Colts quarterback room does not look super bright…

PJ Walker however has been absolutely electric so far in the XFL. He has led the Houston Roughnecks to a 3-0 start and is making plays all over the field like this one:

This guy is like a created player from Madden, except the game made you use your ACTUAL height.

Walker so far this year: 63% completions/755 YDS/10 TDs/1 INT with 87 YDS rushing and an additional TD.

Listen, I may be doing the exact same thing we did with Jacoby Brissett through the first 7 NFL games but he is such a play maker. The issue with Brissett was his conservative nature and lack of pushing the ball down the field. This is not an Issue for PJ Walker.

I think the Colts may have missed their shot at a guy who can at least be a dynamic play maker. Why not a Taysom Hill type package role for Walker? Hell he may have a bigger arm than Brissett and he is certainly more mobile. I mean who could have seen this coming? Clearly Matt Rhule saw this play out in front of him at Temple. If the Season ended today, PJ Walker would be the XFL MVP and deservedly so. Speaking of Matt Rhule, who coached Walker at Temple, he was just hired as the Carolina Panthers Head Coach.

Walker College stats are alright for playing at Temple of all places., but again no one saw this coming. Walkers Temple stats: 57% completions/10,668 YDS/74 TDs/44 INT with 771 YDS rushing and an additional 9 TD.

It would absolutely not surprise me if Carolina swoops in and signs Walker as soon as the XFL season is over. Assuming he has a good relationship with Matt Rhule. Also, who knows what is going on with Cam Newton, injured, highly paid, kind of a head case? Walker would at least be an interesting competitor in camp.

So look for PJ Walker to get scooped up by someone as soon as he is available, my guess is the Carolina Panthers.

Who is Kaleeb?

If you’re reading this, chances are you like sports and things about sports, well this my friend is about sports (mostly).

My name is actually spelled Kalib Amos, usually people with normal parents spell it Caleb. However if you were born in the last 30 years, there’s a good chance your parents also tried to be cool or funky with how they spelled your name. I fully believe my dad smoked a ton of weed in the 90’s and thus my name appears the way it does.

As you can guess, people have mispronounced my name on a daily basis as long as i can remember, so now its kind of a nickname. Being born in 1991, right around the time of Operation Desert Storm, my parents got a lot of looks when I was in the hospital as a baby and they would announce my name over the loud speaker as “Kaleeb Amaas”. I also work with a lot of people of Arabic descent, and commonly get the question “where are you from?” sadly I’m from Columbus, Ohio, not some exotic far away land.

Like I mentioned above Columbus, Ohio is my home. Born and raised in the heartland, THE Buckeye state, don’t worry I hate when they say that too. Speaking of that, a reason i call this “random” sports is because my team affiliations are just that, random.

College Football – Florida State Seminoles

College Basketball – Florida State Seminoles

NFL – Indianapolis Colts

MLB – Cleveland Indians

NHL – Columbus Blue Jackets

MLS – Columbus Crew, I guess.

Since the above is true, If you continue to check out my page you can be sure to read a variety of stories, opinions, and weird facts. I like weird facts, and Jeopardy is my life, so if i learn something you can be sure you’ll get to read about it.

Didn’t see a team you root for in that list? That’s alright, I will be sure to keep you all posted on teams I dislike also, and popular sports stories from around the Interwebs.

A little more about me, I’m approaching my 30’s and deathly terrified. I started this Blog because i have all the time in the world at work to talk about the thoughts I gather throughout the week. Also, i watch sports and movies, as well as scroll Twitter constantly so hopefully my random thoughts amuse you or at least kill 5 minutes of your time. I play golf pretty regularly, recreational softball, I’m also a part of an beer league Volleyball team. Maybe every once in a while I’ll talk about outdoorsy activities, or any one of my 7 nieces and nephews. Who knows?

Anyway… Thanks for checking out my blog, Kaleeb
